Social Studies
The grade 4 social studies program builds on the students’ understanding of families, schools, and communities and highlights the historic development of their local communities with connections to New York State and the United States. The study of local government will introduce students to the structure and function of the different branches and the roles of civic leaders. Students will continue to learn about the rights, responsibilities, and duties of citizenship. They will study the significant people, places, events, and issues that influenced life in their local communities. Students will utilize the Harcourt Horizons New York textbook. By the end of fourth grade, they should know and understand:
First Pre-European Inhabitants of New York State: Haudenosaunee and Algonquins
Four Worlds meet in America: Native American, Dutch, English and French
Pre-revolutionary War and Revolutionary Times: Native Americans, British and New York Patriots or Loyalists
Growth of New York State and the Nation
Government/Civics of Today
