Language Arts

The 5th grade reading program offers your child the opportunity to refine reading skills, improve comprehension and develop a love of various types of literature. The literature we will be reading comes from a variety of sources.

  • Reading Selections from the Harcourt Anthology.

  • Self selected books

  • Teacher selected books

  • Picture books

  • Non-Fiction texts

  •  

    The students will have many opportunities to read in different ways and demonstrate their understanding and skill.

  • Reader’s Theatre

  • Partner Reading

  • Literature Circles

  • Teacher Conferences

  • Reading Logs

  • Various Culminating Projects

    Reading skills focused on in lessons throughout the year will include:

  • Word solving strategies

  • Pacing

  • Checking for understanding                             

  • Using context clues to word solve

  • Story elements

  • Character development

  • Thinking before, during, and after reading

  • Responding to literature orally, creatively, and in writing.

  • Understanding different genres

  • In order to help the children’s love of reading grow along the way to becoming life long readers we ask that the children read for 20 minutes at least 5 days per week. They are also asked to complete a weekly reading log, due on Mondays.

     

     

    The 5th grade Writing Workshop is set up to walk the children through experiences similar to what an author does when developing a piece.

    The children will be keeping a Writer’s Notebook where they will write about life events, people, observations, and wonderings. The notebook will serve as a place where the students can collect ideas and experiment with writing. The notebook will be used as a teaching space to work on specific skills and craft.
