Step 1:Learn about Matter

What is Matter?

Matter
is everywhere.

Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass.

There are 3 main states of matter:

SOLID, LIQUID, and GAS.

Think about the question on  pg. 2 of your Scientist Journal as you
click on the
Buttons below
to learn how temperature can change the state of matter of an object.

Solids

Liquid

Gas
On to Step 2

Step 2: Changing Matter

Some matter changes when heated or cooled.
As a scientist, you will run an experiment to observe how temperature can change the state of matter of an object.

Make a hypothesis. Record your hypothesis
in your
Scientist Journal.
Then click on the picture of the
Science Lab below to visit the lab  so that you can answer the questions on  pg. 3 of your Journal on what you know about:

Click to Go to the Lab

Go On to Step 3

Step 3:Think About. . .

Turn to pg.4 of your Scientist Journal.

Think about. . .

...the
features of matter
...how to
measure matter
...how matter
changes
as you view the presentation by clicking the button below.

After you have watched the presentation, go to pg. 5 of your Journal to create a word list of new or confusing words.

When you have finished your
Wordlist
on
pg. 5, turn to pg. 6.

Do Not Go On Yet

Step 4: Heat Changes Matter!

Now that you have finished your collage, you are ready for Step 4!
Turn to
pg. 7 of your Scientist Journal. Then click on the image of an atom below to see how heat changes states of matter.

Notice how atoms move in solids, liquids, and gases.

Think about what you observed as you
finish
pg. 7 in your Journal.

On to Step 5

Step 5: Let's Experiment!

Click the OK button to try each experiment below.

As you finish each experiment,

think about
3 things you have learned and list them

on
pg. 8 of your Scientist Journal
.

You can listen to the instructions by
clicking the
PLAY button on the control bar above each experiment.

Experiment #1 - Changing State

Experiment #2 - Characteristics of Materials

Experiment #3 - Gases, Liquids, and Solids

Congratulations! You've finished the  Web Quest!
