The Process

Employment at OKTv Productions will require that you remain organized and focused.  For each show, the production crew will be divided into three groups...one group of video editors and two groups of reporters. Over the course of several monthly news broadcasts you will have the opportunity to work in both video editing and reporting groups.

  1. The following roles of a television production crew will be discussed and investigated. Since OKTv is a small production company you may have to fill more than one role.

    • Producer/Director - conceives of the program.  In charge of directing talent and the entire production crew.  Outlines the shots expected of each camera person.  Before tape rolls, informs all crew members of any special effects or cues.  Coordinates on-camera staging with floor manager.  Has the final say and authority over all decisions in connection to this program.  (This position has already been filled by your teacher.  It is not open at this time.)

    • Floor Manager - discusses staging with the producer/director before filming. Assists the director in any way which is demanded. Counts down (5 seconds) before filming begins.   Is in charge of safety on the studio floor.  Directs the activity of all stagehands.  Instructs, places, and cues talent before taking the set.

    • Audio Engineer - Tests all audio sources prior to taping, even if they worked perfectly in the previous production. Makes sure the microphone is plugged in and working.

    • Camera Operator - operates video camera.

    • Equipment Technician - assures that all necessary equipment (video camera, tripod, microphone, etc.) is available, set up and in working order.

    • Researcher - use books, internet and other resources to find and verify facts for stories. Works closely with script writer.

    • Script Writer - works with talent to write scripts for stories. Scripts will be written prior to filming and will be reviewed by the floor manager prior to final approval from the producer/director.

    • Set Designer - creates visuals or gathers props that may be needed for filming.

    • Talent - the people that will be "on air." This includes reporters and guests. Talent will be responsible for rehearsing their lines so filming can proceed smoothly.

You may review the WVIZ Glossary of News Terms to learn more about TV production roles. Remember it takes all types of crew members to run a station efficiently. All crew members will be issued a press pass.

    1. Review several of the news links below to to familiarize yourself with professional news sources. Ask yourself...What makes a story interesting to the audience?

    1. The producers/directors will assign you to a group of about 5 crew members.

If you are in one of the two reporting groups, you will begin by brainstorming ideas for news stories. You will then submit ideas to the director for approval. Once your story is approved, your group will use a production feature checklist to guide you through the process of bringing your story idea to life. The director will assign the schedule for shooting and rehearsal filming will begin. All segments will be practiced, practiced and practiced before a "final cut" is made. Remember you are working on a deadline and must complete filming in a timely manner so the video editors can do their job of putting all the stories and features together on the computer.

If you are in the video editing group will learn to use Windows MovieMaker software to assemble all the different parts of the broadcast into one complete show. Your job is very dependent on the reporters getting you completed film in a timely manner.

The evaulation rubric is available to check if your performance and work is what it should be.
