Two Okte
elementary students have organized a book drive to benefit the youngest patients
at Albany Medical Center. After learning from one of their teachers that
the hospitals waiting areas for families needed some attractive books to
replace the old, ripped ones, Kevin Parker and Nick Ranucci decided to do
something about it.
Since two
Okte students have been at Albany Med for extended stays this year, the 4th
grade boys saw this as an opportunity to show that they cared. After drawing up
a proposal for school principal, Mrs. Price, Kevin enlisted the help of his
friend Nick. The two boys made a thermometer to track the progress of the book
drive. They set their goal at 700 books, and got the word out to school
families.
Thanks to the
generosity of the Okte community, the book drive resulted in over 1500 books
being collected, many of them brand new. The books ranged from pop-up and
pull-out books to baby board books and chapter books like Magic Tree House and
Harry Potter for older readers.
Kevin and
Nick said that they had fun doing this. It was all very exciting
.We would
count the books at home and call each other with the results. It made us feel
good, it made us feel proud. |
