Once again, even when the Governor declares a State of Emergency, Shen doesn’t announce the closing of schools til 5 am. Every other school, college, even the NYS Offices announced closings the night before. Why? What point is someone trying to make. And now, there will likely be a delay for Wednesday, and every other school has announced it, but not Shen. Do you understand that parents have to make decisions about work and childcare? That when possible, advanced notice would help parents? The district works for parents, so how about accommodating us on this?

A. Weather patterns and road conditions change. The Governor declared a State of Emergency for NYC based on a forecasted 24 inches of snow. The weather pattern changed and they only got 6-7 inches.

Even with calling it the same day, Shen had to deal with changes. Based on the main roads, campus roads and buses being cleared, we called a two-hour delay at 4:30 a.m. thinking the highway departments would have a chance to clear the secondary roads in that time. Just prior to the first bus run, our transportation department traveled the roads and discovered some of the neighborhood roads were not cleared and were unpassable…so we had to make the call to cancel school at 6:45 a.m.

As far as parents having to make decisions for work or childcare, you do not have to wait for the district’s decision to do so. If you want to make a decision that is best for your family based on a forecast, you have the right to do so.
