The weekly tests now include 2 sentences that use words or letter patterns they've been tested on and/or high frequency words.  I will also be looking for capital letters and punctuation where necessary.  The test grade will continue to be based on the weekly words.  I will use a check system to indicate accuracy of the sentences.  The sentences will not be given ahead of time.

*Homework: Monday: 3x each     Tuesday: ABC order     Wednesday: Sentences     Thursday: Review words for test on Friday

Writer's Workshop...

We are well on our way to writing "How to...." stories.  This kind of writing requires clear directions and a well, thought out sequence for success.  We are using transition words (first, then, after...) to define a clear sequence.  We will be looking to bring in materials needed to test out many of the stories.  This will help each writer determine if more detail is needed or if it is ready for publishing. :-)

Math...

Two-digit subtraction with regrouping has moved much quicker than the previous chapter.  This concept becomes much clearer having completed two-digit addition with regrouping.  We will continue to subtract 2-digit numbers, learn how to add to check subtraction, problem solve and estimate differences throughout this week.  We will be working toward an end of chapter test next week.  Please review the daily class work that comes home and homework to ensure understanding.

PLEASE continue to reinforce +/- facts daily!  This is very important as we get back to using our subtraction facts in 6.

Packets are part of our work we do in math class.  We often do not complete the entire packet.  The packets will come home at the end of each chapter.  Unfinished pages are always good review for the district quarterly tests.  The unfinished pages are NOT expected to be returned.

*Homework: My math class will receive math homework that reinforces a math skill taught in class that day or week, typically every Tuesday and Thursday.

Science/Social Studies...

-Our science unit is based on states of matter (solids, liquids and gases).  This week's experiment and observations will require the use of all that they have learned throughout the unit to identify the properties of matter they will work with, reaction that occurs and why they think this reaction may have occurred.  This will conclude our experiments for this unit.
