HW- Students will have homework on most nights.  The only exceptions are review days, hands-on with manipulative days, test days and Fridays.  However, I will offer additional homework for an extra treat on Fridays.

**  All math strategies have been introduced.  Please continuously review them with your child at home.  Addition and subtraction strategies will be drilled all year.  Please continue to review them with your children at home even if we have finished the unit.  They will be tested every quarter on their math facts.  The addition strategies to practice are Addition Properties (1+2=3 is the same as 2+1=3), Count On (8+3=11....Say the bigger number and +1, +2, or +3), Doubles (4+4=8), Problem Solving (draw pictures, underline key numbers and words), Double Plus/Minus One or Near Doubles (7+7=14 or 7+8=15), and Add Three Numbers (7+4+7=18....Circle the two easy numbers to add together first),.  The Subtraction strategies are Count Back (8-3=5...Say the bigger number and -1, -2, or -3), Subtract All and Subtract Zero (3-3=0 or 3-0=3), Use Doubles to Subtract (9+9=18 so 18-9=9), and Problem Solving (Guess and Check), Relate Addition to Subtraction (6+7=13 so 13-6=7 and 13-7=6), Missing Addends (8+__ = 14 and 14-8=__), Fact Families (9+3=12, 3+9=12 and 12-9=3, 12-3=9....the three numbers in this fact family are 12, 3, and 9)

Other News...

-Owen Sim is our Student of the Week.

-The 2nd grade teachers will be providing cheese pizza for our classes on Tuesday, February 14th, Valentine's Day.   We will have lunch in our classroom and our Valentine's Day party will follow at 11:30.  Your child does not need to bring in a lunch or money for lunch that day unless they do not like pizza.

-Thank you to Mrs. Eachus for being our Valentine Hostess and calling parents to remind them of what to send in.

-Our character education assembly will take place on Wednesday, February 15th.  Our character word of the month is volunteerism.  This is also SPIRIT DAY.  Students should wear green, purple, or Shen gear.

-If your child forgets their homework at school, they can write their W.E.B. calendar or spelling homework on a piece of paper.

-We have begun A.L.L. S.T.A.R.S.  If math, spelling or W.E.B. calendars are not turned in on the due date, students will be asked to fill out a blue slip for not completing homework and will go to Study or Book Club to complete their missing assignment.  Thank you for your support.  Please remember to read with your children during the week and to sign their W.E.B. calendars.

-Students may bring in a water bottle to keep in class.  Also, students should bring in a free read book from home to keep in their desk.

***OUR ROOM IS NOW A PEANUT AND NUT-FREE ROOM!!!  Please check labels and be conscious of what treats you send in for snack, birthdays, and S.O.W, and holiday parties.  This is for the safety of students with Nut Allergies in our classroom.

-Students will earn a small prize such as a sticker on the Monday of every week if they are able to tell me the SECRET CODE WORD on Monday mornings.  They must be sure not to tell their classmates the code or they will lose their prize.  This helps me to keep track of who is viewing my information on a weekly basis.

Looking Ahead...

-There is no school from February 18-26 for our mid-winter recess.  Students should be filling out a vacation journal and completing their W.E.B. calendars over the break.
