Asperger's Syndrome

What is Asperger's Syndrome?

Asperger's Syndrome is a developmental disorder falling within the autistic spectrum.  It is characterized by impairments in social interaction (verbal and nonverbal communication), development in restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior, interests and activity. 

 

What are the characteristics of Asperger's Syndrome?

-Poor social skills                               - Preoccupied with certain topics
-Follow repetitive routines                   -Resistance to changing routines
-Conversations center on self              -Lack common sense
-Difficulty with abstract thinking          -Movements tend to be clumsy
-Sensory problems                             -Difficulty dealing with stress
-Low frustration tolerance                   -Obsessive on certain interests
-Defensive panic reactions                  -Distractibility
-Odd forms of self-stimulatory            -Inflexibility
  behavior

 

How can I help the student in the school setting?

ü     Keep all speech and instructions simple.

ü     Ask students to restate directions to assure they understand what is asked of them to do.

ü     Limit choices to two or three items.

ü     Pre-warn students of changes in routines or schedules.

ü     Encourage students and give lots of praise

ü     Help them understand social situations and how they should act

ü     Set clear limits and follow through

ü     Provide breaks when the student is stressed

ü     Help students respond to negativity
