Welcome to First Grade!

Days Absent : On days when a child is absent, I will gather the work that is missed and it will be placed in a "We Missed You" folder.. If you would like to pick up the students work, please let me know no later than lunch time (X:XX) of that day, the earlier the better. I will then make sure all work is gathered and ready by the end of the day for you to pick up, or to be sent home with another student.*If work is to be sent home with another student...please state the student's first and last names, along with their teacher's name. *If you are picking work up it will be available for you to pick up in the office after 2:30. |

Homework : Homework for first graders is not assigned on a regular basis. However, I tell my children that their "homework" is to share their classroom work with you nightly, practice their spelling words and read for at least 15 minutes. |

Birthdays : Families are welcome to send in a birthday goodie for us to enjoy to celebrate a birthday. Please make contact with me prior to sending in the goodie so I am aware of when you plan to send it in. Goodies should be sent into school with your child in the morning (if they can handle carrying it in) or dropped off in the office. We usually enjoy birthday treats toward the end of the day.Goodies should be finger foods (cupcakes, brownies, cookies, etc.) Foods that your child can easily hand out to classmates. If you would like to send in drinks...please send in individual juice boxes only. Please do not send in cakes, ice cream, or large "cookie pizzas". Summer birthdays can be celebrated in June if you wish. Please do not send birthday invitations to school unless the entire class is being invited. |

Snack: We will have a daily snack. Please send a healthy snack to school with your child each day that can be consumed in approx. 10 minutes. I prefer a snack such as fruit or vegetables, bagels, crackers etc. Please no sugared snacks. We find it best for the children to have a juice box or water. No glass containers please. In order to help our first graders' learn the difference between their snack and lunch I encourage you to pack them separately. For example, placing their lunch in a lunch box or bag and their snack simply in their backpack or in a separate bag. This way snack is separate from lunch and there is no confusion. Labeling snack with the word "snack" or an "s" is also helpful. Also, telling your child what they have for lunch or that they are buying lunch before they go out the door in the morning, helps with the initial confusion. Forgetting ones snack can be very upsetting for a child, so please help your child to check for his or her snack each morning before they leave. Use this as an opportunity to discuss the difference between their lunch and snack. |

Home Folder: Your child will have one folder called their "Home Folder." This folder will go home with them daily and should be brought back to school each and every day. One side of the folder will be labeled "stay at home" and the other side labeled "return." This way all the papers coming home are somewhat organized and you are able at a glance to know what needs to be returned the next day. It is the children's responsibility to bring this folder back and forth daily. |

Scholastic Book Orders: I will send an order form home almost monthly. Scholastic offers a variety of literature at very reasonable prices. If you would like to place an order, be sure to fill out the order form and make out a check payable to Scholastic Book Club for the exact amount of your order. (Sorry - no cash) The books will be sent home promptly upon their arrival at school. |
