Shatekon second graders find the perfect words to express themselves, when they work with poet/author Jacqueline Sweeney during her recent Poetry and Our World residency. This program was made possible in part through a grant from the Saratoga Arts Council. During her residency, Ms. Sweeney nurtures our young writers as well as motivates many reluctant students to become successful writers. The program encourages students to select words more carefully, and explore and improve specific writing skills and techniques. All student poetry will be featured at Shatekon's Celebrate Reading Night on May 18th.
This program is funded in part by the Arts in Education/local Capacity Building program, a regrant program of the New York State council on the Arts, administered by Saratoga Arts.

The Shatekon fourth graders visited the Brookside Brookside Museum VisitMuseum in Ballston Spa to enrich their social studies knowledge. Students learned about Northeastern Native Americans. The French named some the Iroquois, but these Native People called themselves Haudenosaunee, or People of the Brookside Museum VisitLonghouse. Students also went inside an Algonquian wigwam. Shatekon fourth graders celebrated Buffalo Days! Al and Minga Hoerauf presented an interactive simulation of life inside a teepee. To provide comfort inside this dwelling, Al Hoerauf tended to a fire, as Native Americans would have. Fourth grade students were given the opportunity to observe artifacts, ask questions, and compare this lifestyle with that of the Northeastern Native Americans (Haudenosaunee/Iroquois and Algonquian.) The children quickly realized that Native people's homes reflect the environment in which they lived and their culture. This program helps to promote an awareness of how environmentally conscious the Native American people were.
