Recommendations for Reading Support
Decoding Fluency Comprehension
Read daily! Choose books of interest to your child, as well as their reading level.” Buddy” read and share the reading together. When reading aloud, we use these strategies for decoding, fluency and comprehension. The following are some helpful hints to support your child.
· Skip unfamiliar words and go back later
· Use context clues to figure out words
· Look for smaller words inside big words
· Take a guess as to what might make sense
· Reread books/paragraphs to achieve fluency and help your child experience success
· Tape your child reading
Questioning to Engage the Brain
Author-What is the author trying to tell you in what you just read?
Characters-Who are the main characters? Do they do things you like or dislike?
Setting- Where does the story take place? When does it take place? (present, past, time of day)
Plot- What is an important event that happened? What is the main idea of what you just read?
Style- What special words does the author use to help you see the story?
