Hello! My name is Janice Lutt and I teach Extended Day Kindergarten (EDK). EDK is an early intervention service that provides children with extra support and time needed to accomplish kindergarten goals. There are large developmental and age ranges in kindergarten. Because of this, some children need more opportunities and experiences to learn. It is not a special education program, nor does it label children in any way. EDK helps meet the children's needs and prepare them for first grade. We use a combination of large and small group instruction that includes learning centers and computer software to promote literacy skills. Children are recommended for EDK by myself and their classroom teacher based on screenings done in September, observations and work samples. Parents are contacted and given the opportunity to participate in the program. Our focus in September is primarily on letter and sound recognition, phonemic awareness and fine motor skills. Later in the year, this is expanded to include writing. The amount of time a child spends in EDK may vary and the program is flexible. Our maximum class size is 12 children; and we are located in room one.
