Spelling

Our focus in Second Grade is mastery of the basic sight word vocabulary.  In addition, the children learn common spelling patterns while using the Harcourt Trophies Reading Program.  The weekly sentences incorporate sight words from the book Second Grade Month by Month Phonics by Patricia Cunningham.

What are sight words?

Sight words are those words that most frequently appear in books.  In first grade they might include words such as: and, what, where, name, etc.  The sight words in second grade build upon those taught in first grade and include harder words such as: could, because, animal, they're, there, their.

Below are the spelling patterns taught in second grade.  Each week the lesson we are working on will be linked so you can practice the sentences at home.   Click here for an updated word wall word list, which will be updated monthly.
