Extracurricular Activities
We just learned about a new organization for children with intellectual and physical disabilities. It's called Sports Are For Everyone (SAFE). The mission of this organization is to provide children with disabilities an opportunity to learn the positive values of recreational athletics. It is based right here in Clifton Park. For more information, contact Jim Fitzgerald at 383-8076 or coachjimfitz1@yahoo.com.
We recently shared a new book in Mrs Iannon's 2nd grade class called Have You Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud. According to one reviewer, "This heartwarming book encourages positive behavior as children see how very easy and rewarding it is to express kindness, appreciation and love on a daily basis." The children in Mrs. Iannon's class learned the difference between bucket filling and bucket dipping through a variety of activities (e.g. role playing). The children had a lot of ideas to share and really seemed to enjoy the concepts presented in the book. If you'd like to learn more about bucket filling check this book out of your local library.
Mrs. Franchini visited Miss Lutt's EDK classes to discuss tattling. Mrs. Franchini read the book Don't Squeal Unless It's a Big Deal to the children. This books helps kids figure out the difference between big deals that need telling and kid-sized problems that kids can work out themselves. To help reinforce when it's okay to tell, the children played a game called "Squeal or No Squeal" similar to the game show "Deal or No Deal". The children enjoyed playing this game and learned more about when it's okay to squeal and when it's not.

Chris Poulos a World Champion Bicycle Stunt Rider and Motivational Speaker recently visited Skano. His visit coincided with the end of the formal instruction portion of the No Putdowns program. Chris provided an inspiring message about the benefits of being kind, humble, respectful, responsible, thankful, healthy, and safe. He communicated this message in a fun and entertaining way. Students and adults thoroughly enjoyed his program. If you're interested in learning more about Chris, please visit his website: www.chrispoulos.com.
Mrs. Franchini recently visited Miss Lutt's EDK classes to talk about how to be a good listener. Listening is an important skill for being a good student and a good friend. Students listened to Mrs. Franchini read, Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen. Next, Miss Lutt and Mrs. Franchini role played good and bad listening for the class. The students did such a great job telling us how we could be better listeners. The class was then given a chance to practice listening with a partner. Miss Lutt's EDK classes showed us what great listeners they are!
