Conflict Resolution

A developmental conflict resolution program reaches children from kindergarten to fifth grade. Developed in conjunction with classroom teachers and our school psychologist, this program teaches students strategies to solve problems in positive, nonviolent ways - skills very necessary in today's complex society.

Kelso's Choice is part of the regular second grade classroom curriculum for Tesago's Counseling program. This is a program that teaches the students how to solve their own problems. We differentiate between "big" and "small" problems. The children can tell which type it is by how they feel. If they feel scared, unsafe, or very worried, it is a "Big Problem", and they do not try to solve it themselves. They give it to an adult they trust to solve it for them. Most problems, however, are small. We tell them that they are old enough and ready to learn how to solve these problems themselves. There are nine strategies or "Kelso's Choices", the children are taught. We ask them to select and use two of the choices when they have a "Small Problem". If the conflict still is not resolved, they go to an adult they trust for assistance. Second grade teachers will incorporate these concepts into the classroom to empower the children in the problem solving process. There are posters and charts in the room to remind them of the steps.

The NetSmartz Workshop is an interactive, educational safety resource from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children® (NCMEC) and Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) for children aged 5 to 17, parents, guardians, educators, and law enforcement that uses age-appropriate, 3-D activities to teach children how to stay safer on the Internet.

The NetSmartz Workshop teaches children three basic rules for online safety.

*I will tell an adult I trust if anything makes me feel scared, uncomfortable, or  confused.

*I will ask my parents or guardian before sharing my personal information.

*I won't meet in person with anyone I have first "met" online.
