| What can I do to help my child with his/her articulation at home? It is important that your child continue to practice his/her articulation at home. Practice across different environments and consistency within those environments, will lead to success. Please use the following sheets, to help your child practice his/her articulation correctly. The strategies that are recommended are those that your child has been taught in speech class.
The /sh/ articulation sheet
The /z/ articulation sheet
Additionally, we are using some oral motor techniques to strengthen the muscles in your child's mouth. For the /r/ we gargle with water to reinforce tongue positioning. For the /s/, /l/ and /r/ I give the children cheerios and they have to place them on their tongue and hold them up on the roof of their mouth. You should ask them to practice this task at home they will know how to do it and where to place the cheerios. This is a great task for tongue strengthening. What can I do to help my child with his/her language at home? This is very dependent on what level your child is at. If you child is in 3rd, 4th or 5th grade I suggest you listen to books on tape together. This is a great thing to do on a long car trip too. You can listen to the books, stop and then talk about what is going on. Ask them the 5 -wh questions (who, what, where, when and why), ask them to make a prediction about what might happen next. Ask them to sequence events in the story thus far. Make it fun!
