New York City Landmarks

Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty was given to the people of the United States by the people of France in 1886.  This special present was given to the United States to celebrate the Declaration of Independence.  The statue is 305 feet tall and is made out of copper.  The statue is so big that her eyes are 2 feet wide and her nose is four feet long. 


  Empire State Building
The Empire State Building is 102 stories tall.  It was built in 1931 and it was the world's tallest building from 1931 to 1972.  Then other buildings that are taller were built.  You would have to go up 1,860 stairs to get from the ground to the top floor.  Luckily, there are elevators too!
 


 
Radio City Music Hall
Radio City Music Hall is part of Rockefeller Center.  It opened in 1932 and has 5,933 seats inside.  It is used for concerts, shows and movies.  The most famous show might be the Music Hall Christmas Show.  This show has big groups of dancers who all do the same step at the exact same time.

 

 

  Rockefeller Center
Rockefeller Center is a group of 19 buildings.  It is called Rockefeller Center after a man named John D. Rockefeller who came up with the idea for the buildings.  Interesting places in Rockefeller are the Today Show studio, the ice skating rink and the famous Christmas Tree.
 
Grand Central Terminal
Grand Central is the largest train station in the world.  It has 44 platforms and 67 different train tracks.  Besides train tracks there are also restaurants, coffee shops, food stores and newspaper stores in the station.  About 500,000 people take trains into or out of Grand Central every single day.

Yankee Stadium
Yankee Stadium was built in 1928.  There are enough seats for 57,545 people to watch the game.  The nickname of the stadium is "the house that Ruth built."  This is because Babe Ruth was an amazing baseball player and lots of people went to Yankee Stadium to see him play.
 
Macy's
The Macy's store in New York City is the world's largest store.  It has 9 floors and fills up a whole city block.  There are 10 different restaurants inside the store.  The shoe section of the store is so big that it is on two floors!

FAO Schwartz
FAO Schwatrz is one of the largest toy stores in New York City.  Some special parts of the store are the giant piano and the Lego sculptures.  It also has a lot of stuffed animals.

 

 

 

 

 
Hershey Store
The Hershey Store in New York City is a very large candy store.  It is 16 stories high!  There are many, many different types of candy to buy here.  You can even buy a huge Hershey bar that weighs 10 pounds!
American Girl Store

American Girl Place is a store full of American Girl Dolls.  It has a doll hair studio, a cafe, a photo studio and plenty of shopping.
Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is usually just called The Met.  There are more than 2 million different pieces of art in this museum, wow!  There are paintings, sculptures, drawings and other types of art like costumes, musical instruments, armor and jewelry.
 

 


  Subway Station
New York City's subway system has 468 different stations!  Most of the stations are underground.  People who want to ride the train go down a set of stairs to get to the platform where the train stops. 

 

 

 

 

 
Bronx Zoo
The Bronx Zoo has more than 4,000 animals.  The zoo is in the middle of New York City, but still has a lot of parks and outdoor areas for animals.  The zoo opened in 1899.  Some of the buildings in the zoo are very old, like the lion house.  The lions now live mostly outside, and the lion house is now the home of lemurs, tortoises and a crocodile.
New York Public Library
The New York Public library is awesome!  There are 89 different buildings that make up the New York Public Library.  These buildings are spread all over New York City so that everyone has a library in their neighborhood.  The main library building has two lion statues in front that are very famous.  They are named Patience and Fortitude.
