ANIMAL PROJECT:
-
Hopefully you are aware that your child has been working on creating a non-fiction book about an animal they have chosen to research. While I hope that each student is enjoying learning more about an animal that interests them, I do have some other motives for having them complete this project. Students are learning:

- Basic computer skills: highlighting, copying information from one application to another, the importance of saving often, resizing and cropping pictures, and how to create a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation
- Google is not the only source for information online
- Libraries have catalogs / databases that contain accurate information written "at their level"
- One needs to decide what information to copy from the internet (i.e. finding "a ton of information – 60 pages" is not always good especially when one is creating a 5 page book
- One needs to identify where one got information from
- Lastly, one needs to find a balance between selecting an animal that interests them and one that they can find information about

The project could/should be done entirely at school. I provided students with a web site (seaworld.org) that contained all of the information they needed. In fact, I suggested they use an animal from that site many, many times. In addition, we’ve been in the computer lab thus for for about 3 hours.

At this point, students should have all of the information they need for the non-fiction book copied into a word document. If your child does not have all of their information, you can help your child research for information at home. That information should then be emailed to me.  I will make the information available to them on the school’s network.  I'm trying to avoid having them hand write notes from the internet as it's more efficient to just copy the information into an application like Microsoft Word and then create a report from there.

I’ve listed on the homework page what should be accomplished each day.

SOCIAL STUDIES TEST: I've placed a study guide on the social studies page in the Native American box .  The homework page suggests what you might want to have your child study each night.

SOCIAL STUDIES:  Starting 12/8, Mrs. Trent will be teaching social studies to my class (I'll be teaching her class science).  The GOOD NEWS (I guess) is that your children will not have to study for my essay tests.  This also means that students will have an hour and a half of science and social studies each week.  Mrs. Trent and I will coordinate our testing so that we don't each give a test the same week.
