This morning, March 21, at approximately 9:35AM the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Department Canine Unit conducted an unannounced, random-search drill at High School East.

This preventative deterrent drill is conducted a couple of times each year at the middle and high school level.  Use of the Canine Unit works to deter those who may think of bringing drugs or other contraband to school. Students don’t know when the rills will take place and they quickly learn that according to law they do not have a reasonable expectation of privacy in the school. Their lockers, backpacks, etc. can be searched if the dog gives the signal that drugs are present.

Drug use is a growing problem in communities all around the country and Shenendehowa is not immune. These drills show students that the district will not tolerate drugs in school.

As a district we practice many different types of drills throughout the year hoping to create a culture of safety and security among our students and staff.

Shenendehowa High School is grateful for the collaborative and cooperative relationship we have with the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Department in an effort to make our buildings safer.
