I don’t see what everyone’s problem is with the whole Trump art issue. All these conservatives saying that this is oppression towards them, get over yourself. It is a Constitutional right to express negative sentiment towards the President, and the student who put the pictures of Trump for people to draw on at the art show were not implying any political leaning. Any Trump supporter could have gone in there and written positive things on the pictures, but they chose not to. There is nothing wrong with creative expression. Just because some students who don’t support Trump want to show their opinions towards the President through art, doesn’t mean that these are the opinions the school itself supports. The school is accepting of all political views, religions, etc. because it is a PUBLIC SCHOOL, therefore FOR THE PUBLIC, which is a very diverse group of individuals, all of which should be accepted, which is what the school does. It’s not even that big of a deal, so I think everyone should just calm down about it.

I am so sorry you have to deal with all these questions from people who have never stepped foot in our school. The poor choices of a few students shouldn’t make an entire school look bad….We have great teachers and adminstrators who would never be okay with what occurred. Kudos to you guys. Hang in there!

Just wanted to say nice letter Mr. Flynt. Your letter sent out about the art show was very thorough. As parents its also great to know such issues are handled quickly.

Shen is violating the first amendment with this trump art…freedom of speech…everyday more and more of our rights are being taken away while soldiers are putting their lives on the line fighting for them

A. Please read the section on First Amendment Rights in our Code of Conduct.

You know nothing about this art show fiasco. Get your facts straight. Nobody put a sign telling people to draw on the pictures, it was there to begin with because it was an INTERACTIVE DISCUSSION PIECE. The point of the artwork was to get students talking about Trump/politics/activism. Never did anyone encourage hate speech–just free speech. Stop spreading misinformation.

A. We don’t care who put the sign up, the sign and the artwork are not the problem, it was the obscenities. We don’t allow it on shirts, on hats on art or anywhere else for that matter.

I would like to express gratitude for the district for its courage and compassion in creating a safe prayer space for all students. Those criticizing it are simply using it as an opportunity to spout their anti-Muslim, anti-anyone different hate. Any student who wants to pray may go there and do so. The reason the room is focused on Muslims is simply because they are the ONLY student show asked for a place to pray. As Christians, we are off for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Good Friday, Easter. The school calendar accommodates our faith. It is not asking a great deal to have a quiet place to pray during a free period when one is in school on a holy day in your faith. And any student can pray there. Honestly, whether it be the anger over the transgendered students needing to use a bathroom, or the not very subtle racism against Blacks students heard daily, or the anti-Muslim prayer room chatter, or the intolerance of gay teachers and students, I am disgusted by the mean-spirited ignorance of this community. I am sure ever parent would want compassion for their child. Why is it so hard to be compassionate for other people’s children? I hope the district continues to stand on the right side of history, even if the community and the country is not at the moment.

Why is the Shen pool at Gowana not open to the public during the summer. Taxpayer money is going into it’s upkeep while it sits unused for almost three months during the summer. As taxpayer money pays for it, it should be open to those taxpayers, as other Shen athletics facilities are, such as the track and tennis courts.

A. Other facilities do not need certified lifeguards.

It is my understanding that the high school principal and other administrators initiated a meeting with an imam seeking advice on how the school could be more tolerant and accommodate Muslim students in fulfilling their cultural and religious obligations. Based on this meeting, Ramadan prayer rooms were made available to Muslim students to fulfill their religious obligations privately, during the school day on the Shen campus. Did these same administrators meet with religious leaders from other faith communities and implement their suggestions in the same manner? If not, the school district is favoring one religion above all other. Unconstitutional. The reasonable solution is to allow all students permission to leave campus to fulfill their religious obligations at home or within their faith community.

Written by on June 12, 2017 in Grapevine

A. Actually yes. Several years ago the district brought together a number of religious leaders to help create the Religious Observances and Instructional-Related Activities policy 8630 and regulation 8360R
