As the budget vote draws near, I was happy to see that one of the provisions is to provide another high school math teacher for the lab option classes. My son is currently taking Algebra II & Trig this year with the lab option. I commend the district for providing this option to students. As a junior, my son needs to take Pre-Calculus in his senior year but we were very disappointed to learn that Pre-Calculus with Lab is not an option for him because it is not a REGENTS course. In my opinion, the district must look beyond only preparing students for “tests” and prepare students for college and beyond. “Striving for Excellence” is what makes EVERY student succeed!

A.  Thank you for sharing your thinking.  Math classes with labs are offered for the Algebra, Geometry and Algebra 2 courses to help students prepare for Regents-level work and also to help students work toward the Advanced Regents Diploma.  While most students have experienced success in Pre-Calculus as a result of their foundational math courses, we will continue to evaluate if there are other courses, such as Pre-Calculus, where student success may hinge on support from a lab component.
