Congratulations to the Shenendehowa Robotics team, Team 20 for being chosen as a Semi-Finalist in the FIRST® Innovation Challenge!

This year’s robotics program was unlike any other. With in-person competitions cancelled, the season was divided into 3 virtual challenges: An individual Robot Skills Challenge, a Game Design Challenge, and a Product Innovation Challenge. The inspired students of the Shenendehowa High School robotics team, also known as Team 20 in the robotics competition area, took on all three of these challenges. The team met virtually 2 to 3 times a week, and then received approval to meet in-person and socially distanced for the last several weeks.

While we are still waiting to hear the results of the Robot Skills Challenge, and the Game Design Challenge in May, the Innovation Challenge results were announced early so that semifinalist teams can submit additional information as they compete for one of the 20 World Finalist Awards.

The FIRST Innovation Challenge (sponsored by Qualcomm) encourages students to be innovators and find solutions to society’s greatest challenges. Specifically, teams were to “Identify a problem or opportunity to help people (or a community of people) keep, regain, or achieve optimum physical and/or mental health and fitness through active play or movement.”

Breaking off as a subgroup, several team members brainstormed dozens of ideas and then down-selected to an issue that personally affected one of the team members, tracking the energy required to operate a manual wheelchair. Pulling from a wide variety of backgrounds, the team members interviewed wheelchair users and physical therapists. They researched inexpensive sensors and circuitry. They designed a glove to incorporate these sensors that would not negatively impact the user. They tested their design in various conditions. Finally, they developed a prototype mobile app and website to use with the product. Dubbing their project the I-Roll Fitness tracker, they presented their design for judging virtually on March 28.

We are very proud of our Innovation students, and wish them the best of luck as they compete in the next level of the competition.
