School bus drivers with less than one year experience attend the NYSED mandated 30-hour Basic Course of Instructions. Drivers are exposed to different handicapping situations so they will have a better appreciation of the most vulnerable of our student population, the children with special needs. In the pictures you will see some of the drivers with soundproof earphones, and or dark masks or both to simulate a person who is hearing or visually impaired. You will also see drivers utilizing wheelchairs. They also go through a Sensory Overload station to simulate what a person with autism experiences when there’s a lot of stimulation in their environment that they have to contend with. And another picture shows a driver with Oven Mitts trying to do basic routine tasks such as tying shoes or retrieving a wallet from a pocket etc.

The Basic Course itself covers twelve chapters focusing on Laws & Liability,, Handling the Bus, Emergency Planning, Medical Emergencies, Bus Stop Safety, Know Your Bus, Student Management, Student Safety Training, Special Needs Transportation, School Transportation History Lesson to name a few.

Every new school bus driver with one year or less must take this SED Basic Course before they go over the one year mark, otherwise they can’t continue to drive.
