Shen senior Jerry Gretzinger is in his second year of the Game Design and Implementation program at Capital Region BOECES. He hopes to parlay his interest in video games and coding into a career as part of the future of the Video Gaming industry.

“I developed an interest when I was younger in game design and then coding so there was no way to pass up this opportunity,” he said of enrolling in the program his junior year of high school.

Students in the Game Design and Implementation program learn the “ins and outs” of video game design, 3-D modeling and computer programming. They also learn the history of games and create a wide variety of games, including board games, card games and dice games while exploring various art concepts during the first year and 3-D modeling during the second year of the program.

“After I go to college for game development, I hope to get a start in a small company and then later in a big game design company or even start my own,” Jerry said.

Gretzinger is entering an industry that is actively seeking new designers. Jobs are expected to increase by 4 percent through 2029 and the median U.S. salary for  animators and multimedia artists was $75,270 in 2019.
