Important information regarding Grade 6-8 NYS Testing

Written by on March 26, 2021

Parent/Guardians of Middle School Students,

Learning has continued through the 2020-21 school year, with students, families, and teachers showing all that is possible in spite of the COVID-related adaptations.  Although some have perceived the Gr. 3-8 NYS Assessments as optional, Shenendehowa sees the assessments as an important part of the learning process.

Students take assessments throughout their educational journey so educators are able to monitor learning and growth over time.  In addition, assessments help us monitor our programs and instructional practices.  As a result, Shenendehowa is making preparations to administer the New York State assessments in both ELA and Math for students in grades 3-8 this spring.  These scores are important in evaluating the level of our success during this unique year of learning.  We are encouraging all students to take the NYS Assessments.  The data will provide important information to teachers and school leaders about what has already been learned and areas for future learning.  Taking assessments is part of life regardless of the myriad of paths students will take in both college and career.

The Middle School NYS ELA Assessments will be held on Monday, April 19 and Thursday, April 22.  Only session 1 of the assessment will be given this year.  Our school and testing schedule for these two testing dates is outlined below.  Please note, all NYS State Assessments must be completed on site; therefore, any CVL students who will complete the assessments will need to come to school on the appropriate day.  Please note that students will follow their normal schedule on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday of this test week.

A similar message will be posted regarding the Middle School NYS Math Assessments once the ELA assessments are complete.  Administration of the Math assessments will take place on Monday, May 3rd and Thursday, May 6th.

For planning purposes, we need your assistance with the following:

  • All Parents/Guardians – If you plan to refuse to allow your child to take the ELA or Math assessments, please fill out the form that was emailed to you by Wednesday, March 31, 2021. Due to COVID restrictions, including social distancing and space limitations, we are asking parents who have submitted a test refusal to keep their child home on their testing day.
  • CVL Parents who would like to have their child participate in the assessment, please fill out the form that was emailed to you by Wednesday, March 31, 2021.  That form is needed for planning purposes to assist our transportation department.  Students who participate in the assessment, can be picked up by their parents at the completion of their assessment or remain in a room with other CVL students, attend their afternoon schedule virtually, then take the bus home with their peers at 3:15pm.

On testing days, students will arrive at the normal time and go directly to their testing room (to be determined).  Although we have allocated a 2 hour window for the administration of the exam, we will allow extended time for students needing it or those whose I.E.P. includes this accommodation.

  • 9:30-9:45am Students arrive to testing location
  • 9:45am-12:00pm Testing
  • 12:05-3:15pm Run condensed schedule

ALL students need to bring their school issued chromebook to their testing room.  It is imperative that chromebooks are fully charged the night before each test.  Other than their school assigned chromebook, please remind your son/daughter that no electronic devices are allowed in the testing rooms during testing. Cell phones, watches, etc. should be left at home on testing days.  Your child is welcome to bring a water bottle and a book to read quietly after testing.

Thank you for your support and cooperation.  If you have any questions, please contact your school principal.
