Is the summer work for AP US History graded? Lit classics? AP Chemistry? I’m just wondering if summer work in general can be graded/ put into the grade book for that class and specifically would like to know the three I asked for… Thank you

A.  Summer assignments are given for many reasons.   In all courses, summer assignments provide practice opportunities so that students maintain their skill level over the summer.  In AP courses, summer assignments are given typically because schools in New York state start much later than in other states – but AP exams are given on the same dates around the country.  So our students at Shenendehowa need to work on material before the course begins in order to keep up with the pacing required by exams given in early May.   Many departments offer meetings in May/June to distribute and explain the summer assignment.  Resources are provided (via Google Classroom) to help students review and prepare for a successful experience in their courses.

Students need to be given the opportunity to get help and/or feedback from their teacher on their summer assignments once school starts.  For example, in AP US History, the summer assignment is not due until September 11, 2017.

Yes, teachers may grade summer assignment work or use it as preparation for an in-class assignment. For specific information about how summer assignments are graded, students are advised to speak to their teachers.
