Regarding the new homework policy, are ELA packets with new material, clearly meant for state test practice, a test my child will not take, considered necessary homework under the new BOE policy? It does not seem to be. It is also assigned at the elementary level in addition to the normal homework workload. How do we handle extra homework given beyond the time limits set by the board without it affecting our child’s average?

A.  The homework policy does not preclude assigning the type of homework you have described, however, having students read text passages, respond to text-based questions, and write essays develops important skills in students.  This type of work measures important literacy standards that are essential for success in future grade levels regardless of the source of the material.
