why does shen never cancel sports when it’s 105 outside and not safe for anyone to be outside for over 10 minutes? that’s so unsafe and ridiculous to put children’s safety at risk. safety is not first in this situation.

A. This is not accurate.  Shen follows all the rules and procedures the New York State Public High School Athletic  Association has for heat.  Those can be found by clicking here: http://nysphsaa.org/Portals/0/PDF/Safety/Heat%20Index%20Procedure_1.pdf

What is the name of the NY rules that govern which sports are NY approved for school funding? I know there are some like football, baseball, basketball are and others like cheer, gymnastics, crew that are not on that list but would like to reference which are and can’t find under athletics dept section of website. Thanks in advance.

A. The New York State Public High School Athletic Association Inc. (NYSPHSAA) does not govern school funding. Why is there a no cut policy for track and field but not for other teams? It’s nice to allow everyone to participate but maybe more coaching support could be provided to this sport. There are phenomenal coaches but the numbers are just stacked against them. I believe there were approximately 200 girls on the team this season. I Doubt you’d have lacrosse, soccer, basketball, football or any other teams coach implement a no cut policy without additional support. Why is it ok to for track/field? The team that always ranks in the top for both academics as well as athletic achievements

A. Because track and field is a sport made up of individual events.

Is there a girls golf team/club at shen? If so, for which grades ? Thanks!

A.  No. Girls Golf is not offered as a sport within Section 2.

Why are physical education classes REQUIRED for students that participate in extracurricular sports? During the season for my sport, every day after school I sacrifice my time that could be used for homework (both at home and during my PE period, which could be changed to a stud hall) until 6:30, and I get home around 7, at which point I clean up and eat. Is there any room for negotiation regarding this? Thanks.

A.  Per New York State, eight semesters of physical education is required in order to graduate.  This goes for all students, regardless of whether or not you play an interscholastic sport.

For sports that do not have girls’ teams such as wrestling and football are girls allowed to join the boys’ team?

A.  Yes, under New York State Education Department guidelines for mixed competition.

Do D3 Athletes get to have a signing day in the Spring?

A.  We will be working with Stan Hudy from the Community News to do something for Division III Athletes in the spring.  The NCAA does not have Division III Athletes participate in the National Letter of Intent signing because technically at the Division III level there are no athletic scholarships offered by colleges or universities.

could i get recruited for by a college for doing a varsity sport senior year, or is it strictly for junior year? please respond to this, i currently can’t find anyone to contact for this info, esp. my coach or athletic department.

A.  Colleges recruit student athletes during their season and in the off-season.  Playing a sport does not necessarily mean you will be recruited.

If I am participating in a after school sporting event what period do I need to be in school by to still be eligible to play?

A. You should be in school if you plan to play or practice unless you have a legal excuse.

Is colorgaurd a sport?
