Shenendehowa has a half-day kindergarten program. Children are eligible to start kindergarten in September if they turn five years old on or before December 1st of that same school year. If your child is eligible to start kindergarten in September and you have not received a registration packet by early January, please call the district’s registrar at 881-0662. Kindergarten registration will be held at the District Office at the end of January.

Here are some resources for you about Shenendehowa:

  • Ready Set Grow  is a complete guide for parents of children entering kindergarten.
  • Elementary Handbook BOE 3150P.1- provides information about rules, processes and guidelines.

Here’s what you can expect in the coming months after registering a child for kindergarten

  • Each elementary school has an orientation program for kindergarten students throughout the spring. You will be notified prior to orientation. Students will have an opportunity to ride a bus when they visit their school for the orientation program.
  • In August, you will receive the name of your child’s teacher and the room number, as well as transportation and bus stop information.
  • Prior to the start of school, each building / teacher will provide information on snacks, school supplies, bus safety, volunteering, PTA, etc.
  • In August the district mails a calendar with important information about busing and key events district-wide. This calendar is also available on line at https://sites.google.com/a/shenschools.org/shen-calendar-of-events/.

Kindergarten Session Assignment – AM/PM

  • You will receive a letter with your child’s kindergarten session assignment in June.
  • Assignment to morning or afternoon session is ultimately dependent on the number of sections in each school and the balancing of enrollments across those sections. Shenendehowa is a mobile community and our population changes quite a bit from year to year, so assignments and bus routes do sometimes change.
  • It is our intent to treat each student and family as equitably as possible by applying the same standard to all students. It is unfair to make exceptions for some but not for others. Therefore, Shenendehowa does not make any exceptions to kindergarten session assignments.

Kindergarten Transportation

  • Bus routes are designed to achieve the lowest average ride time for all students thereby minimizing the time each student spends on the bus going to and from school.
  • In August, a bus stop notice is mailed to the parents of each student listing the bus number, the approximate time of the pick-up / drop-off and the bus stop location.
  • At noontime pick up and drop off bus stops for kindergarteners are often right in front of their homes unless there are several students within a short distance. In that case, we typically assign one centralized stop.

Non-public school registration

District residents who attend private or non-Shenendehowa schools must register with Shenendehowa in order to receive services provided by the district (textbooks, busing and other services). Registration is by appointment only.
