May 26, 2020 Dear Shen Community: To say the last several months have been a whirlwind is an understatement. As a school district, we were compelled to pivot our model of teaching and helping students to learn in a remote, online environment. While initially seemingly insurmountable, the task was fully embraced by all. I have […]

Is it Shen decision or is NY State decision why absentee ballots must be rec’vd by June 9th vs POST MARKED for this election. Absentee ballots from a military person/qualified Shen voter not in country cannot possibly get their vote in.

Written by on May 26, 2020

A. All decisions related to the absentee ballot only vote is dictated by the Governor’s Office, per Executive Order.

Did Shen administration consider the amount of lost learning time; material and academic backslide, prior to ending the school year 1 week early?

Written by on May 26, 2020

A. Yes, many factors were considered…including contractual stipulations, state regulations, and the social emotional learning impact on students in a remote environment. And, this is not only a Shen decision, this is a regional and statewide decision.

I am amazed parents are complaining to the news about graduation. The school cannot break state laws and hold a large graduation ceremony. Even if it social distancing could be planned, kids who have been apart for months would not stay 6 feet from each other. I understand the disappointment; my daughter graduated from college this year (arguably a bigger accomplishment), and it is sad not to see her cross that stage. But I also understand that the people truly suffering in this situation are those sick or dying, or families who have lost loved ones. This is a chance to teach your child how to handle disappointment, how to put their loss in the perspective of much greater losses around them. The Shen grads have college, marriage, jobs, kids, and many wonderful life moments that await them and their parents. So many people have so little. Teach them how to count their blessings for the health and safety of themselves and their families. So many New Yorkers no longer have those blessings to count. Remember that. Teach them to be better people. That’s what parents are supposed to do.
