Why, oh why in this era of making ALL schools safe, did Shenendehowa wind up in an audit as being flagged UNSAFE? How long does it take for a school district,so top heavy in administrative salaries, to put the SAFETY of the students, staff and faculty at the forefront? It’s certain that the district office is buttoned up and secure but not the outlying, older educational buildings! I’m sure if enough parents step up to question the great and mighty Robinson he’ll respond by stating, “wheeze takes this see-e-usly” but he truly hasn’t. He plays the shell game by using big words that talk circles around the issue making everyone think actual safety precautions have been implemented! It is known that when the idea of metal detectors was floated by him for the HS buildings, he was concerned about what parents would think! What’s more important to him….making the educational day safe for ALL or not wanting the backlash of parents whose lives have been inconvenienced? He wanted a way in which to implement them but in a disguised manner (if he ever allowed for them to be installed). At HSW, the parents and other vehicles are allowed access to the front of the building unless those tiny orange cones are out (now there’s a real measure of safety). Speaking of HSW, you have absolutely no safe guards for anyone in the rooms in the front or sides of that building, including the Cafeteria. There’s no safety glass or barriers. There’s no vestibule at the Main entrance, open the door for one and ALL in the area come in! You allow unmonitored vehicle traffic to travel past the front of that building and around the side (going past classrooms and a trailer to the wooded area)….the dirt pathway is right there for all to see! Cameras on the outside or in the buildings, only HSE has that covered (looks like all the others are waiting). What safety precautions are in place for any classes that take place outside? Is there a guaranteed line of communication to anyone outside at any building at any time? As we enter the season of nice weather, doors will once again begin being propped open or left unlocked (to be able to get back in). Sure, the memo will go out that they shouldn’t be but face facts here….no one checks, no alarms go off and nothing happens. Bottom line is, the safety of ALL in EVERY educational building should be at the forefront! There is a known budget surplus and it’s been YEARS since the move to upgrade, making ALL buildings SAFE and yet SHEN has FAILED the children of the district! If this were a HW assignment you had the opportunity to get 100%. However, due to tardiness and attempting to pass something off as complete when clearly it’s not, you’ve earned an “F” and that is unacceptable.

A. Please, we ask our community to model respectful discourse and decorum for our students. Not sure where you get your information from but it is incorrect. Please read the item posted on the home page: In 2016, Shenendehowa volunteered to participate in a safety audit to improve communications of safety regulations between NYS Education […]

Yesterday my daughters’ teacher was absent and there was no sub. They had to split their class into the other 2 3rd grade classes. Is 35 kids in one classroom for the day against fire code? They didn’t have desks and had to work on the floor? This is a major safety co concern.

A. While it is not an ideal learning environment, it is not a fire code issue. Clearly, the goal is to always have a substitute for each teacher absent. While there is a substitute shortage, we will continue to make the best of each situation.

Is there any way to organize the Grapevine posts better? It is very difficult to find answers to specific questions that have already been asked because of the way the archives are organized. In addition, the search engine for the entire Shen website is not very good. It’s nearly impossible to find information quickly and easily. Other school districts do it better! For the size of our district, we ought to be a leader in technology and this is not demonstrated by our own website. Food for thought. Please do not ask me to pass this information on to some administrator for whom I will not be able to find contact information on the website.

Here’s an idea: How about instead of teaching girls to cover up their bodies because it might distract boys, teach boys to be decent human beings and control themselves. If someone in the school can’t handle seeing a bra strap or a belly button without freaking out, that is their own fault. Dress codes teach underage girls that their bodies are inherently sexual, and that rather than wearing what is comfortable for them (especially when it’s hot outside), they should cover up so as not to disrupt the learning process of some out of control teenage boys. I am sixteen years old. The sexualization of my body isn’t my fault. It’s the fault of whoever failed to teach these people to be respectful and decent to women. Just a thought as we head into the summer season.

A. Keep in  mind that boy’s undergarments are not allowed r to show and they have to wear shirts to cover their body as well. Boys would also not be allowed to wear really short shorts either.

You have not posted or answered my question on your updated bathroom/locker room policy. Is this an issue you will not address publicly? Shen allows biological males into our daughters bathrooms and changing rooms do you also allow biological males to join girls sporting teams?

A. This policy has been in place since 2014 and we have had no issues with it. If you have concerns, feel free to have a conversation with the superintendent.

Why do select students at Acadia receive the “royal treatment?” There are many well-behaved students at Acadia, and to single out only five of them seems unfair.

A. Occasionally throughout the school year, our lunch monitors nominate many groups of students who are consistently well-behaved during our four lunch periods.  Their tables are decorated with a tablecloth and fake flowers and they are treated to a tray of cookies.  Most importantly, they are recognized and thanked by monitors for their consistent good behavior […]
