Is there a limit on how many temporary parking passes a student can receive at High School East?

A.  There are five temporary parking spots designated by signage at High School East, therefore only five temporary passes can be issued each day. Temporary parking passes are generally only issued to students for medical related reasons, such as having to leave during the school day for a doctor’s appointment. The CAPS office will often […]

Please do something about the parking situation. It seems there are students parking in the lots that shouldn’t be. Is there any reinforcement of the rules? Are there enough spaces for every driver that has been given the opportunity to park? This has been ongoing all year and nothing seems to be getting done about it.

A.  This is an ongoing battle. We issue tow letters and have towed vehicles that park without a pass. Our monitors and CAP’s frequently check the parking lot. Yes, there are enough spaces for everyone that has been issued a pass.

If you have lunch in Highschool East are you no longer allowed to go to the library during your lunch period?

A.  The library is open during lunch and students are permitted to go. There is, however, a capacity limit in the library and if it reaches that the library stops accepting students until there is room.

I pick my child up esch day in the pick-up drop off line outside HSW. Lately, there have been many buses from other districts and coach buses blocking the pick-up line, making parents back up, move, go elsewhere. Can you clarify the school’s expectations of this area? I feel like I’m doing something wrong or these drivers aren’t being told the proper places to park. Thanks

A.  For those looking to pick up a student at High School West after dismissal, would you please park your car in the front parking lot and then proceed to the front circle once the buses head out of this area.  This will prevent students being picked up from having to walk through the parking […]

It breaks my heart to ask, but will all grade levels be practicing shooting drills anytime soon?

A.  In accordance with our Emergency Response protocols, buildings practice a myriad of drills.  The active shooter demonstration by the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Department has been conducted in the past but not drilled. We are looking to review it and begin practicing it in the buildings.

What is the reasoning behind waiting till June to tell parents if their child is AM or PM kindergarten? Registration is in January yet we have to wait nearly 5 months! People need to arrange for before or after care or make a choice to enroll their children in a full day private program. If you are NOT going to offer full day kindergarten you could at least have the courtesy to tell parents the am or pm selection sooner.

A.  First, not all Kindergarten students are registered in January.  There are many more who register after that time.  Second, the district uses the number of students in March to determine staffing levels for the next year for all grade levels. Third, once the staffing levels are determined the number of sections for each grade level […]

Is there a policy in place for teachers using essential oil defusers in school? My daughter has complained several times about her teacher using hers. The smell makes my daughter feel nauseous. I told her to tell the teacher. She is afraid to speak up as the 6th grade Acadia teacher informed her it couldn’t possibly be because it is an essential oil and it is a calming oil that should be helping her stomach. She shouldn’t be worrying about getting a backlash from a teacher because she is using this defuser not all people toerate them I know I am sensative to certain smells myself ( perfumes and candle scents). Where can I find information on if this allowed in my childs class? Thank you.

A.  There should be no diffusers being used in classrooms or any place else in district.  It is a fire code violation.

What is the phone policy for teachers? One of my teachers uses her phone during class and doesn’t turn it on silent almost every day.

A.  Unless it is an emergency,  no one, students or staff, should be talking on their phone during a class period.

Why do we allow kids who have been suspended or expelled from other schools just come into Shen and ruin the experience for the rest of the students? If they were bad enough to get expelled from one school, what says they aren’t going to do it at our school, especially since I see kids get suspended and go right back to it when they get back like nothing happened.

A.  Any resident student is eligible to attend school. As for prior disciplinary issues, those things are reviewed and handled accordingly.

When an elementary school hosts intramurals before the start of school are they required to have a school nurse available?

A. No, they are not.
