We all […]

“If there is a bedrock principle underlying the First Amendment, it is that the Government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea itself offensive or disagreeable,” Justice William Brennan. Before Shen gets into the “banning” business, it can become a teachable moment. Yes, even speech you find offensive is protected.

Up until yesterday, I was pleased with how different virtual learning was compared to last year. Yesterday was a joke; no attendance taken, no accountability. Not a great way to start the expectations of Virtual Wednesdays for students. Virtual Wednesday’s really means a day off unless a teacher makes a conscience effort to schedule class time, which is now reduced on those days. Let me clarify a prior comment: Confederate flags and swastikas are not specifically listed as banned in any school policy. As such, they can be allowed if the administration changes its position on these symbols of hate. Why does the Board of Education and Administration continue to avoid making these bans explicit?

A.  The Code of Conduct says students/staff shall not wear or display culturally (race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status)  derogatory, offensive, or divisive symbols; or items that are vulgar, obscene, libelous, or denigrate others because of race, color, religion, creed, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, or disability, while at school, on school grounds, or participating in school-related […]

After a week of receiving many, many daily email reminders to complete daily health screenings, I have not received any for the last 2 days. I have also checked my spam folder and nothing. Did something change? I know I am not the only one.

A. We are aware that some parents have not received the daily self-certification emails due to certain email extensions being blocked by the Spectrum Internet filters…the most common one being blocked is the @nycap address emails. The vendor contracted to develop and monitor the software application, EdVistas, has resolved the issue.  All parents should now […]
