What are green and white awards? I got a letter in the mail for them!

A. The White Letter Award is awarded to students who have been selected by their club advisor for exceptional service/dedication to a club/activity last school year.  The White Letter Patch is awarded to recipients for the first time.  The White Letter Pin is awarded to recipients who have already received a White Letter Patch in a previous year.

The Green Letter Award is awarded to students who achieve a Weighted GPA of 95% or higher during the previous school year.  The Green Letter Patch is awarded to first time recipients.  The Green Letter Pin is awarded to recipients who have already received a Green Letter Patch in a previous year.

You did not answer the question of why masks without air filters are allowed. Why are they not allowed? Is it distracting?

A. I am not sure what your question is… if you mean why are masks with ventilators not allowed, it is because of CDC guidelines. The CDC updated its guidance Aug. 7, urging the public to also avoid these masks: “Masks with exhalation valves or vents should NOT be worn to help prevent the person wearing the mask from spreading COVID-19 to others.”

What the procedure when a teacher or student tests positive, like the case at Chango? Is the whole class required to get tested, are they directed to stay home, is the classroom immediately sanitized?

A. When the Saratoga Public Health Department informs the district that there is positive case, the district’s COVID Response Team meets to begin gathering all of the information for the health department to begin contact tracing protocols. This includes information like class lists, phone numbers, last date in school, seating charts, lunch information, recess information, masks, distancing, amount of time spent with individuals, transportation to and from school, self-certification, family members and more.

The main consideration when recommending mandatory quarantine for precautionary purposes is pro-longed, direct contact with a positive individual.  This is a summary of how it is looked at:

  • The positive individual is A – Mandatory isolation
  • The people in pro-longed, direct contact are B – Mandatory quarantine
  • The people in contact with individuals identified as B are C.  Nothing recommended unless B becomes symptomatic/positive.

The letter we received from the School nurses, indicated our children will be sent home “immediately” if they display certain illness symptoms. Runny nose or cough were among those symptoms listed. It further stated my child will be required to be seen by a medical professional and have a Covid-19 test performed before returning. It is fall, it is allergy season….an occasional cough and/or runny nose is not an acceptable reason to put a child (and parent) through all of this. I understand the DOH is requiring this however I hope the school is advocating for the children as the community is.

Why does Shen refuse the ban the confederate flag being worn on campus? If Guilderland can, we should too.

A. We do. Our Code of Conduct does not list every single thing by name that is not allowed in school or on school grounds. The confederate flag would fall into this category. “Students shall not wear or display culturally (race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status) derogatory, offensive, or divisive symbols; or items that are vulgar, obscene, libelous, or denigrate others because of race, color, religion, creed, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, or disability, while at school, on school grounds, or participating in school-related activities.”

I am new to Clifton park and not sure how things work around here my daughter will be going to 2nd grade !! And heard nothing but great things about the school ; but how do I get started with parent portal ??
