The parking lot at the rear of HSE is over-crowded. Staff park wherever and extend into areas around the cul de sac of trees, then crossing the area where parents are expected to drive as they drop off students. Staff parking along the marked areas cross 2 lanes of traffic outside of the cross walks. No parent wants to injure a staff member. PLEASE encourage staff to use the cross walks and park only in marked areas

A. Thanks for the feedback. This summer the district will be reworking much of the parking and roadways around the high school.

Please post the wording on the petition concerning the new bathroom policy. How many students signed? Did parents also sign? What is the new bathroom policy and what are the concerns of the students? Why are parents once again cut out of the equation?

A. Only the Board of Education can set policy. It is not a policy, that implies long-term, districtwide and not changeable. Like high schools across the country, Shenendehowa High School has been struggling to contain the vaping problem among students.  The high school administration has been trying a bunch of different things to address the problem, one of which is sign in procedures and increased monitoring of the restrooms. Parents were notified through the Infinite Campus email. Parents were also invited to two different information sessions on the vaping problem and the efforts to contain it, very few parents attended. The high school administration does take into consideration the feedback provided by students and makes adjustments while still focused on the safety, health and well being of the entire student body.

With the flu being seen in various elementary school buildings throughout the district, why are communicable disease norices not being sent home by school nurses?

February 22nd, 2019 by

A. We do not send home notices about the flu. It is safe to assume that it is present in our schools every year…sometimes it is confirmed by a test, many times it is not.

Do 9th graders have to take the SATs?

February 22nd, 2019 by

A. No, but they can if they wish to do so.

Could you please provide information on how the high school policy that prohibits students who are failing more than one class from attending clubs and school events is enforced? Is there a list of ineligible students that is checked when tickets are sold? if so, who sees this list? Do other students see the list? How does this actually work? Btw, I think the district really ought to look seriously at who is affected by this policy and what message it sends to them as to noninclusiveness and consider terminating the policy.

Academics: A report is run after every interim and quarter for students failing 2 or more subjects.  It is sent to counselors/case managers to see if there are any extenuating circumstances. Then an e-mail is sent notifying the student of ineligibility.

Attendance/Behavior- students are informed by a CAP in a meeting.  Students get a warning for their tardies before they are on the ineligible list.  Students with a level 3 or 4 infraction are automatically ineligible. Some infractions have the ability to work their way off the list through community service.

This process was reviewed in a video with students during advisory (students signed off that they saw the video). The list is shared with athletics. For anything with ticket sales- the names come to CAP for verification- students selling tickets do not have access to the list.

Why aren’t students doing chemistry labs required to wear gloves? They are dealing with dangerous chemicals, and then touching all of their papers, pencils, and phones. It seems like this is not a safe method.

January 30th, 2019 by

A.  All required safety protocols and procedures are followed when conducting investigations in our science laboratories. At times, students are required to wear gloves as a precaution and/or teachable practice when certain materials or chemicals are being used. However, students at the Middle School and High School levels are not exposed to or allowed to work with “dangerous” chemicals at any time.  If students prefer to wear gloves, even when not required, they can speak with their teacher, who will provide them upon request.

So, Shen has a Twitter, but it’s blocked on Shen’s Campus… The Shen BYOD denies access to personal cellular networks or plans and denies access to Virtual Private Networks. So there is no way to access Shen’s Twitter without breaking the BYOD policy. Could you at least unblock Shen’s Twitter? Or add a separate section regarding news on Shenet?

January 30th, 2019 by

A.  It is not possible to whitelist an individual Twitter feed.
