Why doesn’t Shen allow varsity athletes to be exempt from PE?

December 3rd, 2018 by

A. New York State doesn’t allow athletes to be exempt from PE.

Why did Shen decide to make the new shenschools.org domain when setting up G Suite? Why would they not just use an existing domain (shenet.org) so that not all staff would have 2 email addresses and so that students would have the same domains as teachers. It just seems illogical in all regards. Please let me know why she chose to do this.

A.  We could not use the same domain name at the time because we had/have an existing exchange email system using shenet.org.

Do girls in 8th grade have to try out for outdoor modified track in the spring, or do they just get placed on a team? Also, is there cuts?

December 3rd, 2018 by

A. There are no tryouts for modified track.

Why do certain students require an aide to accompany them? Isn’t it really expensive? My son tells me there are some special-needs students who do absolutely nothing – no school work, yet we’re spending huge amounts of money on political correctness and mainstreaming.

A.  Students with disabilities have the right to a free and appropriate education, just like your son. This is what is best for students AND required by federal and state laws. In order to have meaningful participation in school, some students require a high level of support. We constantly monitor and evaluate services for our students with disabilities and make decisions for their education through a comprehensive process that is facilitated by the Committee on Special Education (CSE). The CSE determines the services that are appropriate for each student to access and participate in school. While it may appear that some students are not “doing” anything, they are in fact learning academics and social skills which will foster their long term success and participation in society. Our goal as an educational institution is to provide opportunities for all students to access their potential and leave with the skills necessary to be productive members of society. If you would like to learn more about why students with disabilities should be included watch the Willowbrook documentary.

Has the school ever considered putting some sort of tracker on the buses? For instance there could be an app, where the students are able to type in some information, such as the bus #, which would then tell us where the bus is, and how much time we have before it arrives to our bus stop. This way it would be a lot easier to be able to know how much time we have, and be able to make the bus on time and be ready early. Thanks.

A. In 2017, the district did test an App which would allow parents and students to track their bus location/arrival time. Unfortunately the app did not perform as we had hoped. We experienced a significant time difference on some of the buses from anywhere between 2-9 minutes, this would have created more issues for the department but more significantly for the parents and students. We will continue to look at this technology and hope to have something in place in the near future.

In High School west, are the counselors just for college and planning schedules or do they provide emotional support as well, like the ones in middle school? If not, is there a specific place in school for this? Thank you

At age 17, can a student attending Shenendehowa drop out without parental consent?

November 20th, 2018 by

A. NYS Education Law states that a student must attend through the year which they turn 16.  Parents are requested to sign the forms, however there is nothing the school can do if they reach that age and refuse to come to school
