In the original calendar for 2020-2021, Monday June 21 was a holiday for the observance of Juneteenth. In the revised calendar, it is not. According to NYSED’s website, June 18th is the day for observance (i.e. no Regents exams given that day.) Can you please clarify which day Shenendehowa students will be off in observance of Juneteenth?

A. Technically, the law does not go into effect until June 2022. The NYSED Testing schedule was developed to provide school districts the “option” of recognizing the day this year, if they had enough days in the calendar (meeting the 180 day NYSED Requirement). We will be analyzing our school calendar days utilization, recognizing we used several days in the beginning of the year to plan and prepare for a smooth opening of school. If it is feasible, we will decide and communicate with the public in the coming week, by May 1. The calendar developed and approved for the 2021-2022 School Year has Juneteenth built in pursuant to NYS Law. If it is feasible to do so, the BOE would need to approve the modification to the calendar.
